I remember as a kid I never went trick or treating. It was just something that our family did not do. My parents didn’t have anything against Halloween, we watched Halloween movies and decorated but we never went trick or treating until I was a little older. I was probably six or seven when my mother finally let me go trick or treating and even then my mother discouraged me dressing up as anything scary, she did let it happen though.
I don’t think she wasn’t against me being something scary, I think she didn’t like her little girl dressing up as something scary or ugly. She would’ve rather had me be a princess or something cute like that. It’s fun to dress up all feminine and pretty but I think my mother was slightly disappointing when I wanted to be a “Monster Bride.”
That’s what Halloween is all about to me though. I think Halloween is supposed to e that time of year we show that we aren’t scared of all these crazy, ugly things. When we put on scary costumes we get to be on the other side of the scaring or making the scary things seem beautiful or not as scary. I’ve always enjoyed trick-or-treating and dressing up. I’m a little old to trick or treat now but I think I will always look for opportunities to dress up. I like just doing all black and wearing a mask for Halloween, it’s comfortable and I don’t have to wear makeup at all. But I will be doing an actual costume soon.
