I know that there are probably a few people a little grossed out my the title. I didn’t really want to talk about this but I thought there may be others out there struggling. Biting my nails was always a nasty little habit that I would do subconsciously since I was three and there really was nothing that could help.
I tried that nasty tasting stuff that you put on your nails to help and that did nothing. I tried keeping them painted and that never lasts long. I tried doing acrylics and as much as that helps me stop biting my nails, when they come off my nails are brittle and disgusting and they hurt. I continued to bite my nails after that. I love acrylics but I don’t know if they are for me. I may give them a few more tries in the future.
So, none of the above worked. So, I tried to address the root cause of the nail biting. My anxiety.
Know what triggers the habit– I often bite my nails when I am nervous or when there is a lot going on, I also do it if miserably bored out of my mind and often I bite them because I am crazy OCD about hangnails.
Self care – Nail care – Make sure you are spending sometime everyday just relaxing and possibly taking care of your nails. Always moisturize you hands, carry some hand lotion in your purse daily. When you are giving yourself a manicure make sure you are being gentle and not pushing your cuticles back too far or whatever. That can actually make your nail situation worse. Also self care can help to reduce some of the anxiety that is causing you to bite your nails.
Carry a nail file with you – This can help when you break a nail at work. before you start biting at it smooth it out so it isn’t a distraction.
Let your nails breathe – I love having polish on my nails but it is so unhealthy to do it all the time. You need to let your nails be natural every once in a while. Maybe once a month you should take a week off.
Let your friends know– If your friends know about y nasty habit then they can literally smack your hand every time it goes near your mouth. That’s what my mom used to do to me lol. It didn’t work for me but it might work for you.
Overall just being aware and making sure you are taking good care of your nails will help you. Every time to you go to bite them try to visualize what you want your nails to look like. Realize all the hard work and the days it takes to heal and grow them back to normal.
Biting your nails is a nasty habit and I’m so glad I have stopped doing it finally. My nails look so much better. They are still not perfectly where I want them but a few years ago I could’ve never imagined them being this naturally long ever.
Another thing that helps is a nails soak here is my Favorite:
- 1 Cup of Green Tea
- 1/2 of a lemon
- 1 tsp. of olive oil
If I can keep them healthy I’m thinking about finally doing acrylics again at the end of next month. I’m so excited!
